Before long, rumours of Kelly’s imminent departure were widespread. In his second year in office, Trump abandoned entirely the practice of listening to his advisors, returning to the unfettered, spontaneous approach that fluked victory in the campaign.

Nevertheless, General Kelly remains in office for now, as Trump is increasingly taking the view that he doesn’t need a chief of staff—or, given the number of vacancies that persist in the administration, much in the way of staff at all. This might have encouraged him to keep Kelly in the role, as he at least seems to understand when he’s not wanted.

In April 2018, Kelly was reported to have called Trump an idiot, but unlike his former colleague Rex Tillerson, he denied it. This displayed a misplaced loyalty to his commander-in-chief ahead of his own reputation, as there is no danger denying the charge itself.

Like all of Trump’s senior staff who aren’t related to him, Kelly will ultimately resign or be fired, and go back to being a decorated ex-military hero who made a foolish decision to get involved in politics that significantly tainted his legacy, like Colin Powell before him. Despite his long experience in many of the most significant battlefields around the world, he will always view wrangling Donald Trump as his toughest assignment.
